Title: A Few Brief Moments
Quote from Story:
"Coming to the roof of the Volkswagen I see it. A golden beam of light, a message from heaven, the perfect line. No more than two inches wide it's actually straight enough that you can thread a bike through this needle making the necessary changes in trajectory by tipping your head from this side to that."

Title: Leadville 100
Quote from Story:
"The time I devoted to cleaning Ms Moots (my bike) after each ride was remarkable, especially after a rain ride as there was lots of granite sand that was major trouble for my drive train. The mornings were clear and glorious but the rain clouds were usually in place by 1 PM in the Leadville area and dumping by 2 PM. Again, I did these training rides by myself and only saw three other cyclists during my race course riding; where were the other 749 entrants?"

Quote from Story:
"I went for only one bike ride this summer, but what a bike ride it was! The Great Divide Mountain Bike Route is the longest mapped, off-pavement cycling route in the world. The 2,470 mile route extends from the Montana-British Columbia border in Port of Rooseville to the far southwest corner of New Mexico in Antelope Wells-a tiny, dusty border crossing into Old Mexico. Generally staying within 50 miles of the Continental Divide, the GDMBR traverses some of our country's wildest and most rugged terrain, as well as some of the most scenic."

Title:
Mountain Bike Culture
Quote from Essay:

"The culture of Mountain Biking is an interesting one but also a common one. There is tremendous camaraderie involved with Mountain Biking. We always want to help each other out. We can't stop talking about Mountain Biking. In addition, we are always buying ridiculously priced items for our bikes and bodies to make the whole bike ride better and more fun. It very common for a Mountain Biker to have a $3000 bike and more invested for clothes and accessories. We all love the sport, we all have something in common, I'm not sure if it's a culture or an addiction."

Title: My First Time
Quote from Essay: "We all remember our first time. No, not that first time. I'm talking about our first ride without the training wheels. For me, it was on Christmas Day when I was four years old. We were living in this duplex off the Bayshore freeway in San Mateo California. Got the folks out of bed around 6 that morning. Would have been earlier, but my Dad threatened to kill me if I got out of bed before that. I believed him, still do."

Title: Time

They have no cages and they don't beat eggs.
They can't open bottles or tap new kegs.
With so many pedals, it's hard to choose.
Get TIME ATAC's, you just can't lose.

Shimano invented the pedals called SPuD
Which work like a charm if you keep them from mud.
Time ATACs work better when covered with goo
But sometimes releasing is harder to do.
Egg beaters have four sides and really look rad;
A true revolution? Or just this year's fad?
Weight weenies use Frogs and think they are the tops.
Free-riders like pedals with platforms for drops.
With all of these options you really can't lose.
Though none of them work very well without shoes.

Title: Of The MTBMIND Kind
Date: 03/12/02

Going by train or plane,
Is relatively tame, extremely expensive
And most of all, a huge pain.

The pollution and the lack of exercise
In a Mercedes Benz, or perhaps a Lincoln Town Car,
I somehow sense, would just not be up to par.

Swimming is all very nice and swell,
Except that the only water in our town,
Is located in the sewer or a well.

I used to be able to run quite far,
But it definitely did not help my mother's mood,
When my shoes tracked in tar.

The crazy idea of hopping on one foot,
Not to mention being childish and inefficient,
Can only be accomplished by a character in a fiction book.

So you see,
There remains just one choice
Obviously the only right one for me.
To forever ride my lovely mountain bike,
Pedaling strong, hard, happy and free.
For of the MTBMIND kind, is clearly the way to be.
